What are Chakras?

The basics about Chakras

Chakras are energy centres at various points in our body. A chakra is thought of as a spinning wheel of energy that exists and interacts with us. From the base of the spine to the top of the head, they affect how well the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects of yourself are functioning.

Each chakra centre affects your life in different ways. If a chakra is blocked, energy is not flowing through smoothly, and the area of your life that the chakra is related to will start to experience blockages and difficulties. If a chakra is unbalanced, it can mean that there is more negative than positive energy, or an overflow of energy that exceeds your current capacity, hence creating real life problems.

Once the chakras are balanced and energetic blockages removed, you’ll find yourself feeling physically better, and can achieve a breakthrough in the negative emotional patterns you might have.

The 7 major chakras

There are 7 main chakras, and each chakra has its own vibrational frequency that is depicted by various colours.

The Root Chakra

Located at the base of your spine, the root chakra is red, and it deals with the material world: survivability, financial and emotional security, and physical strength. However, it is more about how secure and safe you felt as a child rather than how wealthy or fit you are now.

During childhood is when a child feels the most vulnerable and in need of support and security from his environment and his parents, and this relates to the development of the root chakra. If, as a child, you have had your essential needs met by your parents or caretakers and you had a fairly stable home environment, you would have felt that the world was a safe place to be in.

However, if you had not received what you needed or desired as a child, or there was a delay before you could receive them, or you were in a destructive environment growing up, you may have felt that life was a battle of survival. This would cause your root chakra to become blocked and you may constantly experience anxiety or emotional instability.

On a physical level, blockages in the root chakra may manifest as pains in the hip, lower back, constipation, and lethargy. You may also experience a lack of confidence, constant fatigue and daydreaming. When this chakra is balanced, you create a solid foundation for the rest of your chakras to open up and you may feel accomplished and energised more frequently.

The Sacral Chakra

Located above the pubic bone, the sacral chakra is orange, and it deals with our creativity, emotions, imagination, sexuality, and passion. As children, our imagination and creativity often run wild. There is free, colourful and energetic flow from our minds into what we create. However, as we grow older, we are taught that rules are to be abided by and that creativity has no place in the road to success. Consequently, our creative flow gets more and more suppressed, and so does the development of the sacral chakra.

When this chakra is blocked, we become more concerned with what is considered ‘normal’ instead of finding new ways to solve problems or do certain things. There are only more permutations of what others have already done, as compared to something creatively new that belongs to you. We may also experience a lack of passion, motivation and sexual drive and it is easy to slip into depression.

When the sacral chakra is balanced, creativity, colour and joy is present and flows freely in your life.

The Solar Plexus

Located in the stomach, the solar plexus is yellow, and it deals with our individuality, image, self-expression and personal power.

When blocked, one may feel indecisive, small and timid. We may also experience chronic fatigue, a sense of helplessness and an inability to take control of our own lives. When unbalanced and overactive, we may experience an endless, insatiable hunger for power and control.

When the solar plexus is balanced, we may experience a stronger willpower, more courage and confidence. You become more proactive and disciplined in your own life and it could manifest into abundance.

The Heart Chakra

Located above your heart, the heart chakra is green, and it deals with the physical and spiritual aspects of life. It centres around feelings of love and those related to it such as peace and gratitude, and it connects us to divine realms.

It is almost impossible to live without being hurt by someone or something, and when these grievances are not released and the person does not heal, the heart chakra gets damaged and blocked. People with a blocked heart chakra may find themselves preferring to hold onto and live with the hurt. Sometimes it manifests into a desire for revenge on the people that have hurt them. When these feelings of bitterness, loneliness, jealousy or vengeance accumulate, there is little emotional space for love and positive energy to flow through.

When the heart chakra is balanced, your emotional space is fairly clear and free of negative feelings and obstructions, and love will flow through more easily. You will be able to give and receive love with ease.

The Throat Chakra

Located in the throat, this chakra is blue, and deals with communication. It affects your ability to express yourself assertively, clearly and authentically without being concerned with what others think. When balanced, it allows you to speak your truth.

Oftentimes, our society choose conformity and correctness above authenticity and independent thought. As a result, we become concerned with how others perceive us and how we are judged. It becomes easier to tell people what they want to hear, what seems to be the ‘safer’ thing to say, rather than speaking truthfully. Our voice gets lost in fear, which results in a fear of public speaking, fear of judgement, fear of being ostracised.

These are signs of a blocked throat chakra. Physical manifestations of a blocked throat chakra can also be frequent sore throats or a persistent hoarseness in the throat.

On the other end of the spectrum, if this chakra is overactive, the person may also engage in gossip, spreading rumours and excessive criticism of others.

The Third Eye

Located between your brows, the third eye is indigo, and it deals with spirituality, awareness, insight and intuition.

When this chakra is balanced, you may have greater abilities in imagination and visualisation and a more active dream recall.  You may also start to gain a deeper understanding your inner world and spirituality, and establish a connection with your higher self.

You may gain more clarity and transcend the duality of good and bad, right and wrong, and black and white. You are able to see things objectively for what they are, similar to the perspective of a witness. You might be able to help another to view a troubling situation from a more objective perspective which may help them move forward in it.

Your intuition may also strengthen, and you may start to experience inner guidance, premonitions and an ability to see what is coming. When the third eye is blocked or inactive, it may manifest physically in frequent headaches, an inability to focus, imagine and visualise.

The Crown Chakra

Located at the top of your head, the crown chakra is purple, and it deals with self-actualisation, enlightenment and transcendence from the physical plane.

When this chakra is activated, you start to expand and transcend the material in this world, and you will start to become more inclined towards fulfilling a higher purpose.

You will become more aware of the ego and you will see the bigger picture – that the ego is what ties you down and holds you back from evolution. Forgiving and letting go will come more easily and you may find yourself removing yourself from the drama and becoming more empathetic. You may also start to feel a universal connection, that everyone and everything is connected.
